ABSTRACT

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a rare group of inherited disorders with defects in the development of one or more tissues derived from primary embryonic ectodermal derivatives. The inclusion of ED does not include all ectodermal derivatives and is manifested with a defect in skin, hair, teeth, and eccrine glands. Dry skin, frontal bossing, scanty eyebrows, and hair follicles are common features seen in these patients. The patient may suffer from high fever due to the absence of eccrine glands. Intraoral findings include a partial or complete absence of teeth with generalized spacing. It can be inherited or caused by a genetic mutation, and it can also happen without a family history. This case report presents a 12-year-old female child with hypohidrotic ED involving a multidisciplinary approach in ED that was beneficial both physiologically and psychologically is discussed in this case report.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Subprosthetic stomatitis is an inflammatory process of the mucosa in the oral cavity covered by a removable prosthesis, with a multifactorial cause and high prevalence. Objective: To characterize subprosthetic stomatitis in patients with removable prosthesis treated at the dental clinics of San Gregorio University in Portoviejo in the period March-November 2019. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, with the following inclusion criteria: patients over 18 years old, both sexes, good general health, no toxic habits, use of removable prosthesis, total or partial, made of acrylic or metals. All the patients involved in the research signed their consent, information given to them before taking their dental records taken by the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador, from which socio-demographic data, clinical signs and characteristics of the prosthesis were extracted. Results: 100 patients were evaluated. Forty-five per cent showed clinical signs of subprosthetic stomatitis; the female sex (33%) predominated and the age group 40-59 years with (26%). Most of the prosthesis did not fit or adapt correctly and were in poor physical condition in 80%, 82.2% and 91% respectively. 84.4% of the patients used removable partial prosthesis, made of acrylic, for a period of 1 to 6 years, (60%) of the cases. Conclusions: The diagnosis of subprosthetic stomatitis is associated with poor physical condition, maladjustment and inadequate adaptation of removable prostheses, which indicates the need for the institution to establish educational strategies towards the community for prevention and early diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

After the teeth were extracted, maxillary and mandibular alveolar ridges show the opposite resorption pattern and as a result, the mandibular arch is enlarged than maxillary arch relatively. In this situation, we should evaluate both alveolar ridge relationship and arrange the artificial teeth properly for stability of removable prosthesis. This case is a 77 years old male patient who wishes to make removable prosthesis and has atrophic alveolar ridge. By use of model scanner and CAD software, the angle between interalveolar crest line and occlusal plane was easily measured. Depending on the measurement, the artificial teeth are arranged in unilateral cross bite and after completion, patient was satisfied with the denture which showed proper stability, retention, support.

ABSTRACT

Candidiasis is the most common mycotic infection in oral cavity andcaused by fungi candid. Oral candidiasis is one of three principalreasons for consultation in a geriatric population. A natural part of theway of living of the fungi Candida is the growth on surfaces. It growthmakes common that the fungi Candida colonize the dental prostheses,so the denture stomatitis or dental-related stomatitis is development.Denture stomatitis diagnosis is quite important because from the totalpopulation using dental removable prostheses around of 50% is between65-74 years old and 70% is between 75-84 years old. The ofthis study was identifying oral candidiasis frequency related to dentalremovable prostheses in patients from Universidad Anahuac, DentalSchool (México Norte), from January 2016 to May 2016. ABSTRACT

Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic disease that is characterised by the formation of blisters and erosions on the skin and mucous membranes following minor traction or trauma. Oral manifestations of the disease include obliteration of the vestibule, ankyloglossia, and microstomia. Oral rehabilitation, and prosthetic rehabilitation, in particular, is a challenge. This article describes a simple, inexpensive prosthetic alternative for a partially edentulous patient with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.

ABSTRACT

Almost two-thirds (63.2%) of the Chilean population aged 65 and above use removable prosthesis. When they cease to be functional, injuries may occur in the oral mucosa, with denture stomatitis being the most prevalent. This is an inflammatory process of the supportive mucosa of varying extension and severity, with its main etiologic factor being infection by Candida spp. The aim of this investigation was to determine the quantity and species of yeast of the genus Candida and their association with denture stomatitis in carriers of removable prosthesis, before and after the rehabilitation treatment. A descriptive quantitative study was conducted on 34 patients, with a mean age of 69 years, and carriers of a non-functional removable prosthesis, with and without prosthetic stomatitis. Saliva samples were taken before and after the treatment for the counting and identification of genus Candida yeast. The variables were statistically analyzed. The results showed a diagnosis of prosthetic stomatitis in 55.9% of the subjects, of which 29.4% were Type I and 26.5% were Type II. The Candida sppcount was higher in the subjects with prosthetic stomatitis both before and after the treatment. The count decreased significantly after installing a functional prosthesis. However, it remained high in those with prosthetic stomatitis. The most frequently identified species was Candida albicans.

ABSTRACT

Heat-activated resin has been selected as material for the preparation of removable prosthesis basis for over 60 years. Microwave-activated and semi-rigid resins have been introduced more recently; however, little is known about their ability to retain biofilms, especially in the case of semi-rigid materials. Therefore, this study evaluated C. albicans adsorption onto four resins employed in removable prosthesis basis. The materials Onda-Cryl (Classic, microwave polymerization), QC-20 (Dentsply, short-cycle heat-activated polymerization), Lucitone (Denstply, heatactivated polymerization), and Odontoflex (Odontoloflex, thermally injected polyamide resin) were investigated. Ten specimens (10.0X5.0X2.0mm) were prepared for each material, following the manufacturer's instructions. The samples were sterilized (121ºC, 25min, 1 atm), placed in tubes containing 10.0 mL of RPMI broth (Inlab) inoculated with C. albicans ATCC 28366 (106 CFU/mL), and incubated in a shaker (48h/37ºC). Next, the specimens were transferred to other test tubes and washed with sterilized distilled water (10s), and were then placed in RPMI broth, under agitation (10s). Aliquots of the RPMI broth were seeded in solid agar Sabouraud culture medium (Difco), which was then incubated (48h/37ºC). The resulting colonies were counted, and the data were analyzed (Anova One-Way, Tukey, p≤0.05). On the basis of C. albicans ATCC 28366 adsorption, the materials were classified in the following decreasing order: 1) Odontoflex (690,000CFU/mL), 2) Onda-Cryl (454,000CFU/mL), 3) Lucitone 550 (256,000CFU/mL), and 4) QC-20 (254,000CFU/mL). Odontoflex and Onda-Cryl were significantly different (p≤0.05), and they were also statistically different from the other tested materials. Lucitone 550 and QC-20 were similar in terms of yeast adsorption. In conclusion, larger and smaller C. albicans ATCC 28366 retention were verified for the polyamide resin and the heat-activated resin QC 20, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The dental prosthesis aims to replace one or more teeth or tissues for protection and support absent, rehabilitating the balance stomatognathic neuromuscular system, enabling the performance and maintenance of its functions, promoting the physical well-being, mental and social. This study aimed to determine the main types of lesions that affect the oral cavity, which are caused by use of ill-fitting dentures or poorly cleaned by the patient, mainly in response to an incorrect orientation of the dentist. It is observed that the lesions most often cited by the authors could be avoided if after installation the professional conduct of the prosthesis fit properly, orient the patient and the techniques of cleaning and monitoring, conducting periodic controls.

ABSTRACT

Lasers were introduced into the field of clinical dentistry with the hope of overcoming some of the drawbacks posed by the conventional methods of dental procedures. Since its first experiment for dental application in the 1960s, the use of laser has increased rapidly in the last couple of decades. At present, wide varieties of procedures are carried out using lasers. The aim of this review is to describe the current and emerging applications for lasers in prosthetic dentistry. Used in conjunction with or as a replacement for traditional methods, it is observed that specific laser technologies are becoming an essential component of contemporary dental practice over a decade.

ABSTRACT

The free ending removable prosthesis are those more subject to movements, because of the different forces acting on them in the functional excursions the patient makes in its daily activities when speaking, masticating, swallowing, etc. The splitting of these prostheses with the remnant abutment teeth serving as anchorage has been and is preoccupation of the prosthetics because of the traction exerted on them. In this work we present a case of the usage of “breaking forces” splitting means that have been studied very much, but almost never seen by the specialists, like residents forming in our field. We present the rehabilitation of a patient with hybrid prosthesis.

ABSTRACT

Despite the rise of life expectance and the inversion of population pyramids that has been occurring in many countries for the last decades it is possible to predict a rise of the elderly in dental offices. Modern society increasingly searches for ideal esthetics, this also reflects in dentistry, where the improvement of materials and techniques has increased available options to provide a harmonious smile. It is comprehensible that the elderly also care about esthetics. So, dentists must find esthetic solutions for them. The objective of this case report is to show an alternative for immediate esthetic recuperation of the smile in an elderly patient.
